Dredging Application Lodged for Warkworth Harbour

Posted on March 15, 2016

By James Willoughby, Northumberland, Gazette

Warkworth Harbour Commissioners has applied to the Marine Management Organisation for a licence to remove sand from a deposit on the north side of the harbour, adjacent to the north jetty opposite Broomhill Quay. The accumulated sand has formed a large bank which is encroaching into the navigation channel. The sand bank is making it difficult for larger vessels to turn after fuelling as they may take the ground. In addition to this, it restricts two vessels passing each other due to the reduction in available water space.

Sampling is required in order to ascertain the nature of the sediment and whether or not it can be used locally and recycled to reinstate the beach at the north side and the North Pier rock armour.

The hope is that work can start towards the end of April and be completed in December.
