DredgeWire Exclusive: WEDA Eastern Chapter Meeting Summary and Wrap

The WEDA eastern chapter just concluded a highly successful meeting in Baltimore. The program comprised a variety of topics, focusing on major industry challenges and opportunities to overcome them.

New to the WEDA agenda was a focus on Human Capital. Presentations in that space included professional recruiter Stuart Keeter Recruiters of Raleigh and University Dredging related programs by Greg Williams, PE, from the University of North Carolina. Armand Riehl of GLDD lead a panel on work force development and the value of human capital.

The program also focused on Reservoir dredging challenges with Greg Morris of GLM Engineering.
Erica Janocha, the new dredging program manager at USACE headquarters, provided the group with funding updates and valuable tracking data. The presentations also covered regional topics such as the Port of Baltimore material management program with an overview of new island restoration projects by Holly Miller and Darren Shift.

Key Bridge Channel Update

Brian Lead, safety compliance manager for lead contractor DonJon, gave a highly detailed presentation on the Key Bridge Channel recovery project.

This year’s social event was held at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery with guests treated to famous Maryland crab cakes and local brewed beverages.  Laura Todd with the Alliance for the Chesapeake provided a fact-filled presentation on local restoration projects and the development of a new process to use dredge materials on shoreline projects.
