DredgeWire Exclusive: “NJDOT Dredging Project for New Jersey Windport to be Announced Soon”

Posted on June 5, 2023

The New Jersey Department of Transportation, Office of Maritime Resources, in partnership with PSEG, NJEDA and NJDEP Fish and Wildlife, proposes to hydraulically dredge approximately 600,000 cubic yards of sand, silt and clay to support development of a new channel and vessel berths for the NJ Wind Port facility. The project is located in the Delaware Bay and Salem County, NJ. The NJ Wind Port facility will provide access and loading/unloading of wind energy equipment and components. The channel and vessel berths will be dredged using a 16-inch to 30-inch diameter hydraulic cutter suction dredge. The area to be dredged is approximately 650 feet by 1,350 feet with depths ranging from 37 feet to 49 feet (NAVD88). Dredged material will be pumped 27,000 linear feet (5.1 miles) from the excavation site to final placement and beneficial reuse at an existing 365-acre tidal wetland site within the Abbotts Meadow Wildlife Management Area, Salem County, NJ. The project and the beneficial reuse of the dredged material will restore tidal wetlands and ecological functions by building up large open water and mudflat areas, re-establish tidal marsh vegetation, increase sediment accretion, and facilitate marsh mitigation and climate change adaption. “
