Louisiana’s coastline is disappearing at an alarming rate, threatening communities, industries, and ecosystems.
Senator Bill Cassidy has been a steadfast advocate for coastal protection and restoration, using legislation, funding initiatives, and public advocacy to combat land loss and strengthen resilience. DredgeWire (DW) Publisher Peter Bowe recently had the opportunity to sit with him and discuss his work in this area.
He told DW, “A major focus of my efforts has been the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA), which directs offshore oil and gas revenues to Gulf Coast states for coastal restoration. I have fought to increase Louisiana’s share of these funds, securing billions for projects like the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion, Caminada Headlands Restoration, and marsh creation in Terrebonne Parish. These efforts are critical to rebuilding Louisiana’s natural defenses against hurricanes and coastal erosion.”
DW also noted Cassidy’s role in passing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which has brought significant federal funding to Louisiana for flood mitigation, wetland restoration, and coastal resilience. The bill invested $46 billion in nature resiliency and $17 billion in Army Corps. infrastructure projects across the country.
“Investing in Louisiana’s coastal infrastructure builds resiliency against future storms,” said Cassidy. “That’s why I took a seat at the table when negotiating the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. There are dollars coming to Louisiana to protect and preserve our coast that would have not otherwise been there.”
When Bowe asked him what he has done beyond legislation, Cassidy noted he has emphasized nature-based solutions, such as rebuilding barrier islands and restoring wetlands, to protect against rising seas and stronger storms. He also said “I have been a vocal advocate for Louisiana’s coastal communities, regularly meeting with scientists, local leaders, and residents to address ongoing challenges. I have pushed back against federal efforts to divert critical coastal funding, ensuring Louisiana retains the resources necessary for long-term restoration.”
DW asked “What’s next?”
He said he would continue to push for expanded revenue-sharing models and increased investment in coastal sustainability.
DredgeWire believes leaders like Sen. Cassidy help ensure that Louisiana’s coast remains a thriving environment for future generations, balancing economic needs with environmental protection. Through bipartisan leadership and strategic action, Cassidy remains a key force in the fight to restore and protect Louisiana’s coast.
