A 45.6 m-long dredger vessel coming from Visakhapatnam got drifted towards Kodiakarai coast in the district due to strong winds, police said today.
However, all the nine crew members on board the vessel are safe, they said.
The vessel MV Enrich Shreya-IV, was proceeding to Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district and got drifted towards Kodiakarai coast due to strong winds on Monday, officials said.
The vessel, owned by a Mumbai-based company Enrich Shreya Maritime Infrastructure Pvt Ltd got stuck about 200 meters off Kodiakarai coast.
A police team accompanied by officials from the coastal security group and forest department undertook a boat journey and reached the vessel to conduct enquiries.
Preliminary enquiry with the captain of the vessel, Mitilesh Thakur revealed that the vessel was proceeding to Mandapam for dredging operations, when it got drifted by strong winds and total darkness.
The captain had asserted that the dredger did not suffer any damage and could be easily towed to the sea.
The nine crew members of the dredger have been offered all possible assistance, officials said and added that it will take about three days for the hauler ship to arrive at the spot.
