People walking the beaches on the south end of Beach Haven may notice some large piles of dark sand. It’s all part of a program in which dredge spoils are being used to fortify beaches on the south end of the borough, said Chris Carson, public works director.
Beginning in January, the state Department of Transportation embarked on a dredging project off Beach Haven. Areas dredged included the Pennas, Buoy 77, Morrison’s, Beach Haven Condos, Shelter Harbor, Eastern, Bay Harbor and Southwick channels and Buoy 77 Pennas channel spurs. Dredge material from Buoy 77 is being used to fortify the beaches, mainly along Belvoir, Chatsworth, Dolphin and Norwood avenues.
Carson said borough public works trucks collected materials at the old Coast Guard station located off Pelham Avenue, and then trucked the sand to the beaches.
“They’re calling these the black hills of Beach Haven,” he said. “These beaches frequently suffer from erosion.”
Carson said he expects the replenishment to be finished this month.
The spoils were also used to fortify Parker’s Island, a 4.3-acre island located in the bay west of Morrison’s Marina.
