Dredge Project Completed: South Channel/Bourne – Barnstable County with Ellicott Series 670 dredger

Posted on October 9, 2024

The County Dredge Cod Fish II completed the dredging of the South Channel in Bourne on Thursday, September 26th. This project was intended to remove shoaling that has narrowed the channel restricting navigation from boats entering and departing Red Brook Harbor. The channel was last dredged in 2001 by the County.

Sand dredged from the channel is piled high on Bassetts Island.

The project was completed in two weeks, which in large part was due to the short pipe run (2,500′), and the protection that this area offered allowing the dredge to operate during a five day stretch of strong & sustained Northeasterly winds.

The dredged material from this project was used to rebuild a section of Bassetts Island which protects a large section of the coastal area lying behind the island.

The dredge and pipe will be moved back to the south side where the pipe will be used for the Cotuit project and the dredge will be used for its next project in Yarmouth (Parkers River Approach Channel).

The post-dredge survey was completed on Monday, September 30. The following shows the areas dredged and volumes removed.
