Dredging equipment for work on the $44 million Breakwater Wharf Extension project is expected to arrive in the Port of Eden early next week.

The dredge – known as ‘Machiavelli’ – is scheduled to leave Melbourne tomorrow, Friday, September 1, and could arrive in Eden as early as Monday, weather permitting.

‘Machiavelli’ will move up to 231,500 cubic metres of sand and rock out of Snug Cove to create a minimum clear depth of 10.5 metres for larger cruise ships.

The equipment will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to complete the dredging works in the shortest possible time, with the new berth pocket expected to be completed by February 2018.

“This project will transform the Port of Eden and give our community the opportunity to benefit from the booming cruise industry,” Bega MP and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Andrew Constance, said.

Mr Constance also announced that the contract for the development of a concept master plan for the Eden Foreshore Precinct had been awarded to Cox Architecture.

He said the master plan would provide strategic advice on the long-term development of the precinct, a key tourist destination on the Sapphire Coast.

“The Foreshore Precinct Project has the potential to contribute to the growth of Eden by exploring further opportunities for commercial development and boost job opportunities for the region,” he said.

In another move, the Department of Industry has announced details regarding the progress of the proposed wave attenuator to create a safe harbour at Snug Cove.

The procurement strategy for the attenuator will be a two-stage process; expressions of interest will be called in October, 2017, with suitable applicants identified from that process to be then invited to tender for the project.

A preliminary visual impact assessment is to be undertaken for both a fixed and floating attenuator – although Mr Constance has previously indicated his preference for a fixed attenuator.
