Today, Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) and Chairman of the Dare County Board of Commissioners, Robert L. “Bob” Woodard, Sr., issued the following statements regarding federal funding for a feasibility study performed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on beach nourishment for the village of Rodanthe.
“I am delighted to work with Dare County to provide the funding necessary to advance beach nourishment for Rodanthe,”said Congressman Greg Murphy M.D.“During my time in Congress, I have closely monitored the conditions there and am supportive of this project. Now that Dare County has notified the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers it will engage in necessary cost sharing, I am working to secure the federal share of funding for the feasibility study. Preservation of the Outer Banks and its vibrant communities is one of my top priorities in Congress, and I’m grateful to work on delivering the resources necessary to do so.”

Background
Rodanthe is an area well-known for its swift currents that cause extensive erosion that ultimately causes homes located along the coast to fall into the ocean. A feasibility study, performed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is the first of several steps to conduct beach nourishment and protect the coastal community of Rodanthe. According to federal law, federal funding for the proposed feasibility study must be matched by local or state entities. The purpose of the study is to determine the overall cost of beach nourishment.
