To unclog the Rio Grande de Mindanao in southern Mindanao and rid the river of water hyacinths, a multi-purpose amphibious dredger was deployed by the Department of Public Works and Highways.
Its deployment also aims to prevent further spread of water hyacinths which clogged the Rio Grande de Mindanao and severely damaged facilities protecting river walls and bridges in some areas of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao and Central Mindanao in 2016.
Being considered as the most damaging aquatic plant capable to reproduce an extraordinary rate that chokes lakes and rivers, water hyacinths also affected low-lying areas in Cotabato City, where thousands of residents were displaced due to flooding intensified by clogged water bodies in the area.
According to the department, the newly-delivered multi-purpose amphibious dredger- water master classic V will be a reliable asset to prevent the “green menace.”
The department added, “it is a powerful equipment that can move and work in dry grounds and shallow water areas up to six-meter depth.”
It was acquired by the department for P42 million.
