The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is now looking into the possibility of adding a night shift to the Manila Bay rehabilitation workforce.
Citing DPWH Bureau of Equipment Director Toribio Ilao, a report on GMA Super Radyo dzBB on Sunday said the department is considering hiring additional manpower to work from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
The report said the additional workforce will be in charge of transporting the trash collected from the Manila Bay to the landfill in Navotas City.
The second shift workers will be smaller in number compared with those in the regular shift, who work on the dredging of the bay.
The DPWH in 2016 already rolled out the 24/7 construction of key projects in urban centers across the country, in efforts to fast-track infrastructure development.
The rehabilitation of the Manila Bay began in January, which Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu was reported to have called a “magnified cesspool” given the high coliform level in the area.
Environment Assistant Secretary Daniel Darius Nicer of the DENR’s Anti-Corruption Office—the office in charge of the rehabilitation—said the rehabilitation will be implemented even beyond the term of President Rodrigo Duterte. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA News
