The U.S. Department of Transportation has proposed $44 million in grant funding for a roadway project at the north entrance of Port Newark and the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal, it announced this week.
The Infrastructure for Rebuilding America discretionary grant would enable the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to modernize a 2.9-mile section of road to improve safety and reduce travel times and maintenance costs.
“These timely investments in our infrastructure will create jobs and support regional economies, while helping to spur innovation, confront climate change and address inequalities across the country,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a prepared statement.
The INFRA grant would fund replacement of the Corbin Street Ramp, realignment of portions of Corbin Street, Port Street and Kellogg Street, and improvement of several nearby intersections, the DOT said.
The DOT evaluated 157 eligible applications for the grants from 42 states and Guam, with demand far exceeding available funds. Congress will have 60 days to review the proposed awards, after which the department can begin issuing funds.
