The Department of Natural Resources will hold a public meeting to discuss the proposal by the Waterford Waterway Management District to dispose of dredged materials from the Waterford Dam Impoundment and Tichigan Lake. The meeting is Thursday, Feb. 23, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Waterford Town Hall, 415 N. Milwaukee St. in Waterford. The meeting will begin with a presentation outlining the proposal. Staff with the DNR and a consultant to the Waterford Waterway Management District will be on hand to answer questions and take comments.
Under the proposal, the dredged material will be placed at the following three locations:
The Super Mix sand and gravel quarry, located north of Highway 20 (High Drive) and southwest of Highway 83;
A portion of the Tichigan State Wildlife Area west of Marsh Road; and,
A portion of the Tichigan State Wildlife Area east of Marsh Road.
The receiving properties are located in the town of Waterford.
The Waterford Waterway Management District is proposing to dredge approximately 500,000 cubic yards of sediments from the Waterford Dam Impoundment and Tichigan Lake. The reasons for the dredging include re-establishing the Fox River navigational channel through the waterway; establish dredged channels for boating; reestablish access for properties to Tichigan Lake; reduce nutrient loads in the waterway; and improve fish habitat. The dredged materials will be transported to the proposed disposal properties by pipe. The dredged materials will be dewatered, and the water piped back to the Fox River for discharge.
The department is required under s. 289.54(2), Wis. Stats. to hold a public meeting to describe the nature of the requested disposal and solicit public comment before it can approve a request to dispose of dredged materials. Interested citizens who cannot attend are encouraged to call or write with questions or comments to Gerald DeMers, DNR Milwaukee Headquarters, 2300 North Martin Luther King Drive, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53212. He can be reached by telephone: 414-263-8594, or email: gerald.demers@wisconsin.gov. All comments must be received by Friday, March 3, 2017.
