ILIGAN CITY — Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon visited Iligan City on Tuesday to check on the state of critical infrastructure following the onslaught of Typhoon Basyang.

He ordered the immediate dredging of the Iligan River to increase its carrying capacity after it overflowed last week due to heavy rains, causing flooding in surrounding areas.

But due to lack of equipment, Dizon said the local DPWH office would have to rent from contractors for now to augment their resources.

He also instructed the district engineering office to speed up the clearing of debris from affected roads across the city.

TEMPORARY BRIDGE TO CONNECT ILIGAN AND MARAWI

Dizon also inspected the Panul-Iran Bridge in Barangay Abuno, which got washed out by floodwaters.

The 20-year old steel bridge serves as a bypass road from Iligan to Marawi City.

“Kailangan nating immediately magtayo ng temporary steel bridge ulit habang magpopondo tayo ng permanent bridge sa 2027, kasi ang immediate concern natin is makatawid yung residents ng Iligan City,” said Dizon.

The temporary bridge is expected to be completed within 60 days.

To make matters worse, the flood mitigation structure below the bridge was also damaged.

“Dahil din doon sa bridge na na-washout, tinamaan din ng bridge yung flood control natin dito. So sinira din niya. So dalawa yung kailangang gawin natin dito sa Barangay Abuno,” added Dizon.
