Diversion Authority and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Meet to Discuss Next Steps for Diversion Project

Finding a new focus is in the works for local leaders on the F-M Diversion Project.

The Diversion Authority met for hours with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Tuesday morning.

They are in the process of planning what to do next, and how to go about the project.

Right now, they’re weighing in on whether or not to appeal the federal judge’s decision to halt construction.

The injunction to stop the project is due to a pending lawsuit between the Diversion Authority and the Minnesota DNR and Richland-Wilkin Joint Powers Authority.

They claim the project impacts farmers and property owners upstream.

After discussing the litigation, and the project’s future direction, the Executive board will meet this Thursday to discuss and decide their next steps.

“Today we went over what modifications could be allowed, what different things could we do. We have talked to the DNR numerous times before, and we have many of the things we think they want solutions to, and we’re encouraged because we think we have many answers to that,” said Mayor Tim Mahoney, FM Area Diversion Board Chair.

Mayor Mahoney says collaboration and speed are crucial and that each year the project is halted could cost an extra $60 million dollars.
