The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, partnered with the City of Destin, Florida to carry out a harbor capacity study by counting vessels in the harbor, on the water, vessel slips, and parking spaces around the harbor area.
The overall goal of the study is to establish a balance between the environmental health of the harbor and the safety of all entities that use and visit the harbor. Ensuring the safety of visitors also promotes the economic viability of the establishments and guests that do business on the harbor.
USACE’s Planning Assistance to States Program is assisting the city to embark on their vision of the harbor area to be a “festive marketplace” environment. This place is to include tourist, commercial, and mixed-use development that will be planned and designed to encourage public access to waterfront views. It will also create a free-flowing pedestrian-oriented environment that does not wall off access to the shoreline, promote convenient public access to the planned boardwalk, and reinforce the identity of the harbor as a world-class fishing village that is open to the public.
