Department of Transport Starts Maintenance Dredging in Dawesville

Posted on February 6, 2018

Department of Transport will start maintenance dredging at Dawesville’s ocean entrance this week, helping maintain the navigational channel for boating.

The works will cost about $870,000 and are expected to be completed in May.

Department coastal infrastructure acting general manager Donna West said the annual sand replenishment at Dawesville helped maintain the natural northward flow of sand along the coast.

“The works will excavate approximately 100,000 cubic metres of sediments from Pyramids Beach and bypass it to nourish the beaches located to the north of the Dawesville Channel,” Ms West said.

“[The works] will assist in limiting erosion on the beaches to the north, particularly leading into the winter months.”

The works will be undertaken using a mobile plant specifically designed for the project, which is able to transfer materials cost-effectively over long distances.
