Authorities in Belgium report that a container vessel accidentally struck and damaged a tanker on the Scheldt River near the Port of Antwerp on Friday, May 30.

The CMA CGM-operated, UK-flagged Containerships Nord was departing Antwerp when it collided with the inbound tanker Beringzee at around 14:15 local time on Friday.

The smaller tanker suffered serious damage to its stern, resulting in water ingress. Two tugs later arrived on-scene to help it remain afloat.

One of the tanker’s crew fell overboard due to the force of the impact from the collision but was later rescued by the captain, who jumped into the water to save him from drowning.

Another crewmember was safely evacuated from a flooded compartment near the stern. This individual reportedly suffered serious injuries and is being treated in hospital.

The crew of a responding boat from the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution administered first aid to both the captain and the crewmember who had fallen overboard. Neither individual required hospitalisation.

Containerships Nord was still able to sail under its own power following the collision. It has since remained at anchor to allow inspections by local authorities.
