Rohde Nielsn A/S, a Denmark based company had won a 20 million US dollar deal to dredge sea sand in Sri Lanka, the state information office said.
Sri Lanka’s state-run Land Reclamation and Development Company Ltd, has chosen the Danish firm after competitive bidding.
The cabinet of ministers had approved a proposal by Megapolis Minister Champika Ranawaka to award the dredging deal to Rohde Nielsen for 19.97 million US dollars.
The sea sand will be used to replenish existing stocks of the SLLRDC in Muturajawela which is sold for construction and also to reclaim some land in Kerawalapitiya.
Sea sand, which is cleaned of salt is being encouraged for use in construction in Sri Lanka amid shortfalls of river sand.
Excess river sand extraction can be environmentally damaging.
