Belgian group DEME’s subsidiaries have landed contracts to develop New Port in Qatar and a maritime project in Singapore together worth about US$200 million.
DEME’s subsidiary MEDCO (Middle East Dredging Company) will for the Qatari New Port project undertake dredging works to realign the access channel and build a new mooring dolphin structure.
Works follow on from the launch of operations at the New Port Project in Qatar, for which MEDCO carried out the dredging of the access channel.
All commercial shipping traffic has now been moved from the Old Port in Doha City to the New Port.
The multipurpose New Port, slated for completion in 2020, will have three container terminals and cargo capacity of 1.7 million TEU per year. Phase 1 container terminal operations began in 2016.
Qatar’s Ministry of Transport and Communication of the State of Qatar is also redeveloping the Old Doha Port to serve as a cruise terminal in the future.
A contract for the Old Doha Port Redevelopment project in Qatar was awarded to MEDCO as part of a joint venture with Jan De Nul Group.
DEME’s subsidiary for the Southeast Asia region, DIAP (Dredging International Asia Pacific) also secured a contract for the Ayer Merbau Reclamation Phase 2 project in Singapore.
It is undertaking the work in a joint venture with Starhigh Asia Pacific, under a design and build contract with the Singapore Government, for 35 hectares of land reclamation as an extension to Jurong Island.
DIAP has been involved in Singapore’s industrial land extensions since the 1990s, including a project to merge seven islands into a single Jurong Island.
Besides the Jurong Island and Tuas View Extension reclamation projects, DIAP is currently executing the Jurong Island Westward Extension reclamation.
Also in Singapore, it is executing the Tuas Terminal Phase 1 Project which is part of Maritime and Port Authority (MPA)’s Mega Port development project.
