DEME deploys visualisation technology to enhance data display

DEME is replacing computer systems on its trailing suction hopper dredgers

Posted on May 15, 2019

Dredger operator DEME has invested in new visualisation platforms for its vessels to centralise onboard operations and reduce space for operating technology by up to 75%. It has installed Alewijnse’s AIViVi visualisation system on trailing suction hopper dredgers to integrate all the dredging process systems in one network.

This platform acts as a central hub on a dredger for distributing information on networked screens around the vessel.

DEME is replacing the computers, keyboard, video and mouse equipment on these dredgers with AIViVi to reduce cabling on board. AlViVi displays information of multiple ship’s systems on several screens placed around the vessel.

Alewijnse product manager Johan van Rikxoort said the AIViVi digitalised platform can also be applied to other vessels. “The platform results in maximum uptime and optimal operational safety,” he said.

“By bringing together multiple systems in one environment, the maintenance and management becomes much easier and efficient,” said Mr van Rikxoort.

He said other benefits are the security of the system, the life-time of the software is extended by the independence of the platform and updates are faster to test and roll back.

“An additional benefit is the platform takes up 75% less space through much reduced requirements for cabling, computer hardware and cabinets.”

DEME and Alewijnse have worked together for three years to improve automation on board dredgers including developing hopper draught and loading systems and controls for the suction tube.
