Another milestone for the Oosterweel project in Antwerp, Belgium. Last weekend, traffic started using the new Bypass. The Bypass is part of the large-scale Oosterweel project, commissioned by Lantis, aimed at completing the ring and improving mobility in the region. It allows traffic to be diverted and keep flowing while the old viaduct is demolished and works start on the future lowered ring road.
In just a year and a half, right in the middle of a densely built city and next to Belgium’s busiest highway, the TM ROCO team, including DEME, completed the northern section of the Bypass. At peak times, around 250 people were on site every day, working in all weather conditions to reach this milestone.
Now that traffic towards the Netherlands no longer uses the Merksem viaduct, demolition of its first section can begin, paving the way for the next phase of the Oosterweel works.
