After battling floods last year, the Delta State Government has started taking precautionary measures before the rainy season kicks in fully.
Specifically, the government is dredging water channels in Asaba, the state capital, and other parts that witnessed floods in recent times.
The government expects this to ensure the free flow of water when it rains.
Apart from clearing the drains and canal, the government is also constructing stormwater drainage and dredging the Anwai River to make it serve effectively as reservoir for run-off water from nearby farms and residential areas.
Also, swamp buggies are being used to ensure blocked canals are opened up to flow into freely into the river.
The Delta State Commissioner of Environment, Mr John Nani, said the exercise became necessary to protect communities close to the floodplains and to prevent flooding generally.
He is confident that the steps taken by the government would be effective in ending the menace of flooding.
“We are being proactive here because, as we all know, Delta State is a lowland, coastal state prone to flooding,” he said.
“The capital city has suffered flooding in the past and the state governor has embarked on the construction of stormwater drainage all over the state to checkmate the menace.”
He explained that the system being put in place would enable rainwater to flow freely through the canals to the Anwai River and ultimately into River Niger.
