Deep Creek Bridge Closure for Maintenance

Posted on August 19, 2024

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Norfolk District will close the Deep Creek Bridge on Sunday, August 18th, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for maintenance. This closure is necessary to repair minor damage to the support beams of the current 90-year-old bridge and to ensure public safety during and after the repair. The bridge will be closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

We kindly request that vessels navigating the Dismal Swamp Canal exercise caution when passing the bridge, to help ensure the safety of the engineers conducting the repairs.

Thorough bridge inspections are completed every two years. While the 2022 inspection showed no significant structural damage, a recent inspection revealed accelerated corrosion.

While unrelated to the ongoing Deep Creek Bridge Replacement Project, this repair is crucial to the maintenance of the current bridge’s functionality until the first two lanes of the new bridge become available for public use in 2025.

The Corps is committed to minimizing disruptions but commuters should expect delays. Normal traffic is expected to resume after repairs are complete, the same day.

Impacts to traffic will typically appear on the Chesapeake Travel Advisories Calendar and shared via @ChesapeakeRoads on Twitter.
