De Klop Successfully Restores Van Oord’s Cutter Suction Dredger Ajax

Posted on February 18, 2026

Ajax – Van Oord fully operational again

We are extremely proud to share that De Klop has successfully completed a challenging and extensive project: the cutter suction dredger Ajax of Van Oord is fully operational once again. Originally built in 2000 by Machinefabriek De Hollandsche IJssel, the vessel has undergone a major revitalisation and is now ready for a new chapter on the water.

What makes this project even more remarkable is that most of the work was carried out during the busy month of December and January. At De Klop, it truly was all hands on deck. Thanks to our extensive network, we were able to mobilise sufficient capacity at the right moments and bring in additional support where needed—allowing us to maintain a tight schedule without compromising on quality.

The Ajax is an impressive vessel, equipped with a powerful electric drive system—a modernisation previously implemented by Van Oord—and delivers performance that meets the highest standards in the dredging industry. Before reaching that point, however, our team faced a substantial technical challenge. The ladder was fully overhauled, the hydraulic systems were completely renewed, and the dredger was mobilised and rebuilt almost as if it were being reborn. Wear parts were replaced where necessary, including new impellers, new seals, and a fully refurbished pump. In addition, a new pressure compensation system was installed, the pipeline pontoons were modified to optimise performance, the OWP motor drive was upgraded, and the cutter unit—previously in service on the Kruipnix—was replaced.

The result is a robust, reliable, and future-ready dredger that is now set to commence sand extraction operations in Groningen. This project demonstrates not only what technical expertise can achieve, but also the power of commitment, teamwork, and a strong network.

A big compliment to everyone involved—your dedication during an exceptionally busy period truly made the difference. On to the next challenge.
