Cyan Renewables, a Singaporean company specialised in offshore wind farm vessels, will collaborate with Dutch engineering firm Ulstein to design new floating foundation installation vessels (FFIV).
As Ulstein claimed, the new FFIVs are expected to lower emissions with “a hybrid power system consisting of dual-fuel engines, shore power, and a battery energy storage system”. The necessity for these new vehicles lies in the increasing lack of heavy lift installation vessels, Ulstein added. The new FFIVs will have “adequate deck space to meet developments in foundation design, including monopiles and jackets”.
The shortage of FFIVs
The issue of a possible shortage of FFIVs in the near future was already brought up by Turner Holm, head of research for Clarksons Securities, as media outlet RivieraMM reported in February. The size and weight of monopiles are expected to increase fast and significantly, with numerous vessels that are currently unable to carry out such installations. This is where Ulstein and Cyan Renewables hope to fill the gap with their collaboration.
Cyan Renewables
Cyan Renewables is an initiative launched in September 2022 by Seraya Partners, a Singaporean infrastructure investment company. As Cyan Renewables mentioned, the company is “Asia’s first pure-play offshore wind vessel owner”. The company focuses on services requiring cable-lay vessels, service operation vessels, and wind turbine installation vessels.
