Cruise Ships Affecting Cargo Deliveries to Tobago…a New Berth May Have to be Dredged

Posted on December 1, 2016

THE Minister of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan is expected to travel to Tobago this week to discuss the problems being experienced by Tobago businesses as a result of postponed sailing of the inter-island cargo boat, Super Fast Galicia.

Last week Chief Secretary Orville London said the meeting is “tentatively” scheduled for Wednesday at the Office of the Chief Secretary.

London said the talks will include the dredging of the port of Port of Spain, to allow for the cargo boat to have its own dock. In recent weeks, the Super Galicia has been unable to sail when sharing its berth with tourist vessels.

The Chief Secretary said the Minister has stated that funding has been identified to begin the dredging.

“The Minister indicated to me that the tender is more or less completed,” London said.

“There is a shortlist, and a contract is to be awarded in very, very short order and work would start very soon after this.”
