Crosshaven Boatyard Sold For Wind Farm Work

Crosshaven Boatyard is based on the Cork estuary

A major Irish boatyard at Crosshaven has been bought by Green Rebel Marine and it is planned to develop the site as a base for servicing wind farms off the south coast of Ireland writes Dag Pike.

Crosshaven Boatyard is based on the Cork estuary and has been used to build and service yachts and commercial craft. It was put up for sale by its owners and the boatyard has been purchased to establish the yard as a base to service the future needs of the offshore wind farms in the region while still retaining the operations at the existing yard.

The 9 acre site features a series of building and repair sheds as well as an open storage area and a small marina. Only part of the water frontage is currently developed and it is likely that the remainder will be developed as the wind farm base. Green Rebel Marine was founded by Cork businessman Pearse Flynn who has invested €10 million of his own money into the project.

The company has already bought two hi-tec vessels that will be used to service the developing wind farm industry with the first of these vessels, the Bibby Athena having already arrived in Cork and been renamed Roman Rebel. Roman Rebel is a trimaran design built in 2014 for Bibby and equipped for advanced survey duties. The second of the two vessels acquired by Green Rebel Marine is scheduled to arrive in Cork later this year.

According to Flynn, Ireland is on the verge of a green revolution that is planned to deliver 5GW of energy in its first stages. “Green Rebel Marine will work alongside the operators of this new array of wind turbines to ensure that they remain operational by using skilled mariners who are trained here. Their construction will not only increase Ireland’s ability to produce renewable energy but it will also create an entirely new sector dedicated to servicing their operation.”

Other activity in this sector comes from Cork based shipping company Mainport Holdings who are reported as having purchased a 50 metre survey and research vessel for operations in the wind farm sector.
