27,000 cubic yards of sand. That is how much sediment will be removed from around the North Manitou Island dock.
The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore said a dredging contractor arrived on North Manitou Island last week.
Officials said over the three weeks, crews will be removing more than 27,000 cubic yards of sand accumulation around the dock.
The work begins after three years of planning with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The North Manitou Island project is just one of the projects the National Lakeshore is working on this summer to reduce the deferred maintenance backlog.
The dredging project will enable the concessioner ferry service, North Manitou Transit, to access the island when they resume operations in 2021.
In June, Manitou Island Transit suspended service due to unsafe docks.
