Port Otago’s new $8million backhoe dredge Takutai in the Steamer Basin yesterday.
The 35m vessel weighs about 650 tonnes.
It has no conventional propellers; instead three 13m legs enable it to crab its way across the seafloor so it can load the barge Hapuka with spoil.
Takutai is capable of dredging to 19m, and will replace bucket dredge Vulcan.
It is expected to be operating by the middle of July.
