Harbour users are being told to expect exclusion zones and more detailed information before work starts.
Described as a “significant part” of the Outer Harbour Project, final contract negotiations are underway.
The harbour office says the new channel will provide a more direct route to the Solent than the current Small Craft Channel.
It says it will allow smaller vessels safe access, minimising potential conflict with the larger ferry and commercial traffic movements.
There is concern about the impact of the work on eel grass beds off East Cowes and work must be completed by the end of March 2019.
