County Puts $500,000 Toward Topanga Lagoon Restoration

Posted on April 6, 2026

LOS ANGELES – County officials on Thursday awarded $500,000 in Measure A funding to the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains to help advance the Topanga Lagoon restoration project, a long-planned effort aimed at restoring habitat, improving public access and addressing chronic issues at Topanga Beach.

According to Los Angeles County, the funding will support design and engineering work for infrastructure, visitor-serving improvements and habitat restoration on the county-owned beach property, moving the project closer to construction.

County officials said Topanga Beach draws nearly 1 million visitors a year and has faced years of coastal erosion, aging infrastructure and more recent damage from the 2025 Palisades fire. Planned improvements include erosion and sea-level-rise mitigation, transit stop and parking upgrades, habitat restoration and an expansion of usable beach area by about one acre. The project also includes a Federal Aviation Administration-approved helipad, according to the county.

“LA County’s Third District is proud to support the continued restoration of the Topanga Lagoon. This investment advances the long-term resilience of our coastline, expands access to nature and recreation for our communities, and protects vital ecosystems as we confront the climate crisis,” Supervisor Lindsey Horvath said in a statement.

The restoration effort is being led by the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains with assistance from the county Department of Beaches and Harbors, California State Parks and Caltrans.
