Aransas County Commissioners approved an amendment to a contract with the General Land Office (GLO) to accept a transfer of funds totaling approximately $2.1 million for coastal management efforts. The funding is allocated for the Gulf Coastal Waterway Beneficial Use of Material project, which focuses on shoreline improvements near Goose Island.
The project involves dredging operations within the Intracoastal Waterway, with the extracted material designated for beneficial use in stabilizing the shoreline. The original contract provided $263,900 for initial engineering and design work, but this amendment increases the total agreement to approximately $2.43 million to cover the upcoming construction phase.
County officials indicated that the amendment was necessary to prove to the GLO that full funding is in place before the project breaks ground. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in the summer. The court voted unanimously to authorize the fund transfer and allow the county judge to execute the necessary documents.
