A $12.7 million contract to dredge sand from Big Pass and spread it along Lido Key Beach was awarded to Cottrell Contracting Corporation.
The project entails dredging and spreading about 710,000 cubic yards of sand on the highly-eroded south Lido Key Beach from the southern tip of the island to about 1.5 miles north.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project was challenged unsuccessfully by numerous lawsuits emanating from Siesta Key property owners. With the contract awarded, the project is due to begin within 90 days.
The start time depends on weather, hurricane season activity, endangered species and environmental windows and the schedule of the contractor.
The news was welcome by the City of Sarasota since the cost is below what the City had budgeted and there will be no need for additional funds.
