ATLANTIC BEACH, Carteret County — It’s almost tourist season and Atlantic Beach wants to make sure it’s fully dressed up for the many who will flock to their beaches.
Just in the last week, you’ve probably noticed the new fences along the beach. It’s all part of a project to make sure everything looks back to normal seven months after Hurricane Florence.
The first and most noticeable change is new sand fencing. Florence moved a lot of sand off of the beach into the parking lots. With the new fences, sand will stay on the beach and not on the boardwalk where a lot of it still sits after the hurricane. That will be cleared off and boards will be replaced as well. There will also be eight volleyball courts built at The Circle.
Why is the town doing all this work?
“We take a lot of pride in our beaches and when visitors come from out of town we want their experience to be really enjoyable while they’re here,” said Morgan Kearns, director of Atlantic Beach Parks and Recreation.
All of the work and additions are being funded from various funds, including parking at The Circle.
