COSCO Shipping’s first methanol dual-fuel containership delivered

Posted on June 26, 2025

COSCO Shipping has taken delivery of the 16,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) COSCO Shipping Yangpu, the company’s first containership capable of using methanol as fuel.

The vessel is the first in a series of methanol dual-fuel containerships built for COSCO Shipping by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Yangzhou.

The 366-metre-long ship is equipped with a 11,000 cubic metre (cbm) methanol storage tank, which is sufficient to complete a one-way voyage between the Far East and the West Coast of America on methanol only, COSCO Shipping said in a statement published today (24 June) on social media.

The vessel also features a streamlined hull design, high-efficiency propellers and fully suspended twisted rudders to reduce hydrodynamic resistance and improve efficiency.

After switching to green methanol, the COSCO Shipping Yangpu is expected to reduce annual CO2 emissions by about 120,000 tonnes, according to the company.
