U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, awarded a contract Aug. 26, 2022, to execute an aquatic ecosystem restoration project at Big Fishweir Creek.
Big Fishweir Creek is an urban tributary of the St. Johns River, running approximately four miles south of downtown Jacksonville. It enters the St. Johns River, a designated American Heritage River, just north of the Ortega River.
The $8.2 million contract was awarded to Underwater Mechanix Services, LLC, of Jacksonville, Florida, under the auspices of the USACE Continuing Authorities Program (CAP), Section 206. It will consist of dredging portions of both Big Fishweir Creek and Little Fishweir Creek.
Dredged material from Little Fishweir Creek, the channel widener and the main channel will be transported by barge for placement at the Bartram Island Disposal Area. Dredged material from the upper reaches of Big Fishweir Creek will be deposited either in an approved upland disposal facility or transported to Bartram Island.
The contract calls as well for the standard turbidity monitoring, endangered species monitoring, vibration control monitoring, channel debris removal and related incidental work required for all similar USACE projects.
