ESQUIMALT HARBOUR, B.C. — Vancouver-based Milestone Environmental Contracting has been awarded the Y Jetty and Lang Cove Remediation Project located at the Department of National Defense’s (DND) Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt naval harbour.

The project, valued at $33.7 million, is the next phase of an ongoing project by the DND to remediate more than a century of military, commercial and industrial use of the harbour and mitigate risk to local ecosystems. Milestone Environmental Contracting will engage in remedial dredging, targeting sediment contamination such as heavy metals, polycyclic aromantic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls.

“I’m looking forward to bringing Milestone’s innovative processes to this next phase of work to remediate Esquimalt Harbour and the continued successful collaboration with the Department of National Defense, Public Works and Government Services Canada and the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations,” Milestone senior project manager Bill Morgan said in a statement.

The Y Jetty and Lang Cove project included an Indigenous Benefits Plan to facilitate the procurement of goods from Indigenous-owned companies as well as training and employment opportunities for members of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations.

Full-time archeology and unexploded explosive ordnance removal teams will also be onsite, and remedial dredging will be conducted by Fraser Pile & Dredge. Milestone is currently wrapping up work on the adjacent C Jetty and ML Floats at CFB Esquimalt and work on Y Jetty and Lang Cove was slated to being by the end of February.
