Construction Contract Awarded for Boat Basin Dredging & McGee Beach Breakwater Repairs; Cayo LLC, of Fort Worth, Texas wins for $5.7mm

Posted on June 16, 2021

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo and the City Council awarded a construction contract to Cayo LLC, of Fort Worth, Texas for the Boat Basin Dredging and McGee Beach Breakwater Repairs. Funding for this Council District 1 project comes from the FY 2021 Seawall CIP in the amount of $5.7 million. The project will make improvements to the breakwater and address shoaling within the Marina that is restricting navigation.

“The City Council has moved forward the Boat Basin Dredging near the Corpus Christi Marina between McGee Beach and R-Pier and Breakwater Repairs at McGee Beach. This is an important investment to maintain our Marina and our beaches. Protecting and maintaining our natural assets Is an important investment for our city’s future,” said Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo.

The Marina breakwater was initially constructed in the 1920s, and the concrete cap was added in 1946. The breakwater’s concrete cap was re-built in 1981 and is currently experiencing severe structural degradation due to age and environmental exposure. The breakwater improvements will make repairs to the existing stone breakwater and remove and replace the existing concrete cap with one that is two feet wider and one foot taller. The dredging will help maintain a navigable depth inside the Marina currently being hindered by sediment accumulation. The dredged material will be placed at the Rincon B West Dredge Material Placement Area that is maintained by the Port of Corpus Christi Authority.

The construction contract approved by Council today will restore and elevate the concrete cap and correct other deficiencies with the existing McGee Beach breakwater. It will also address shoaling within the boat basin that is negatively impacting navigation.

Construction is anticipated to begin in June of 2021 and will last eight months. For the latest information on everything the Corpus Christi Marina has to offer, visit http://www.corpuschristimarina.com/
