WERKENDAM – Concordia Damen has launched a major refit project for Reederei Deymann, one of Germany’s largest inland shipping companies. This involves a comprehensive modernization of the dry cargo vessel Hirschhorn, which recently arrived at Concordia Damen’s shipyard in Werkendam. With this project, the company underscores its expertise in sustainable fleet renewal.
The refit includes the complete renewal of the aft ship. The ship, originally equipped with a single engine, a single propeller shaft, and outdated accommodation and wheelhouse, is being extensively modernized.
The aft section will be cut away for the accommodation, after which the old configuration will be replaced by a twin-shaft propulsion system with two new, fuel-efficient diesel-electric engines of 630 kWe each. In addition, the accommodation and wheelhouse will be completely rebuilt, with increased comfort, improved ergonomics and sightlines, and in accordance with current operational standards.
Life extension and lower emissions
The refit will significantly extend the ship’s service life, while making the propulsion more efficient and reliable. Fuel consumption and emissions will also decrease. Furthermore, the new configuration enables operation in shallow waters.
“This project demonstrates how a well-planned refit can give a reliable vessel a second life,” says Concordia Damen’s Technical Director Bert Duijzer. “We are proud to support Reederei Deymann in keeping their fleet efficient, sustainable, and competitive for years to come. Our team in Werkendam has begun the work, and we look forward to a successful completion.”
Concordia Damen’s refit projects are part of the company’s broader mission to combine sustainability with smart shipbuilding, helping ship owners modernize their fleets in a cost-efficient and responsible way.
