HD Hyundai has partnered with Tampa Ship, part of the Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) group, to launch a strategic shipbuilding collaboration aimed at revitalizing American commercial shipbuilding and delivering LNG dual-fuel container ships.
As explained, the partnership aims to construct medium-sized LNG dual-fuel containerships at the Tampa facility, with the first deliveries expected in 2028. A formal signing ceremony took place on June 19 and was attended by executives from both HD Hyundai and ECO.
Under the agreement, HD Hyundai will support Tampa Ship by contributing to vessel design, supplying specialized equipment, and transferring advanced shipbuilding technologies. It will also be involved in block fabrication and infrastructure investment to enhance Tampa Ship’s production capabilities.
Located in Tampa, Florida, the shipyard is positioned to play a leading role in revitalizing the U.S. commercial shipbuilding sector and addressing the current shortage of domestically built vessels.
The collaboration reflects a broader effort by HD Hyundai to deepen ties with U.S. maritime and defense sectors, following previous agreements with firms like Huntington Ingalls Industries and Fairbanks Morse Defense.
The partnership may expand into other vessel types and heavy industrial port equipment, reinforcing U.S. maritime security and infrastructure resilience.
