Community Coastal Day at the LSU Center for River Studies

Posted on October 28, 2024

The Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) will host Community Coastal Day on Sunday, November 3, at the LSU Center for River Studies (CRS) from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

CPRA has invited its partners from all along Louisiana’s coast to participate in the monthly First Free Sundays event. Unlike typical installments of this event, Community Coastal Day is a celebration of the organizations working tirelessly to ensure that our coast is here for generations to come.

This event offers an opportunity for the public to gain a better understanding of the importance of coastal preservation and to acknowledge the critical work of the organizations involved in this mission.

Community Coastal Day features the following organizations showcasing their efforts in creating a more resilient coastline:

  • Audubon Aquarium Rescue
  • Audubon Gulf United for Lasting Fisheries (GULF)
  • Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana
  • Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act
  • Ducks Unlimited
  • Glass Half Full
  • Louisiana Sea Grant
  • LSU 4-H Wetlands Program
  • LSU College of Coast and Environment
  • Pontchartrain Conservancy
  • Restore or Retreat
  • Restore the Mississippi River Delta
  • The Water Institute

Leeroy’s LipSmackin’ Lemonade and Lagniappe Beignets will also be at the CRS throughout the event for visitors who would like to purchase refreshments.

The LSU CRS is a collaborative partnership between the CPRA and LSU that spotlights Louisiana’s working delta, its coastal program, and the research on coastal restoration and river management.

The Center’s primary objective is to operate the Lower Mississippi River Physical Model, one of the largest of its kind in the world. The model simulates the Mississippi River’s flows, depths, and sediment transport and runs through approximately 190 miles of the lowermost river across the model’s 14,000 square mile section of Southeast Louisiana, including Terrebonne, Barataria, Breton Sound, and Pontchartrain Basins. Researchers, scientists, and engineers use the model to improve their understanding of the lowermost Mississippi River and study how it responds to modification.

Besides the model, the facility houses a state-of-the-art exhibit area offering distinct themes with illustrations and interactive features, including Virtual Reality Headsets for a 3D coast tour. The interactive exhibit space offers opportunities for guests of all ages to learn more about the history of the Mississippi River, Louisiana’s disappearing wetlands, and ongoing coastal restoration projects across the coast.

CPRA staff will be on hand throughout the day to lead discussions and answer questions. You’ll also have the chance to attend a unique educational presentation using world-class projector equipment on the river model.

Parking is available adjacent to the Center on Arches Street as well as in the parking lot on Water Street. For more information, visit http://coastal.la.gov/center-for-river-studies/
