Turtle Lake, a waterway connecting Millers Bay, Emerson Bay and Spencer Beach in northwest Iowa, is in urgent need of preservation, according to a press release from the Save Turtle Lake Committee.
The release explains that, over time, sediment buildup has impacted the flow of clean water into West Lake Okoboji, making navigation difficult and reducing the habitat for local marine life. In response, a committee has been formed to raise the necessary funds for dredging the lake and a portion of the canals to protect this important wetland area.
The preservation of Turtle Lake will safeguard its future as a recreational space for kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing. The Save Turtle Lake committee aims to raise $750,000 for the project and has already secured $350,000 in pledges. Community support is critical to reaching the funding goal by December 2024, ensuring that dredging equipment can be secured, and work can begin in the fall of 2025.
All contributions are tax-deductible, and pledges will only be collected if the total financial commitment is met.
