Colombia awards Barranquilla emergency dredging contract

The autonomous corporation of Colombia’s Magdalena river, Cormagdalena, awarded a 3bn-peso (US$937,000) contract to perform emergency dredging works at the access canal of Barranquilla (Atlántico department) to Belgian firm European Dredging Company Sucursal Colombia.

The company will remove 226,895m3 of sediments from the port access canal during a one month period, Cormagdalena said in a press release.

In the meantime, authorities are drafting a separate contract that will allow to hire a dredging firm for 18 months, instead of having to declare an emergency when conditions at the canal worsen.

“We are reacting in an efficient manner to give an immediate response to the necessities of the Barranquilla port,” Cormagdalena’s head Pedro Pablo Jurado said.
