Civil Court has ordered Sri Lanka-based Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company (CMCCC) to pay USD 1.6 million (MVR 24 million) to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for work carried out under the Rasmale’ land reclamation project.
The ruling, issued on Tuesday, concerns the dredging of 10 hectares of land in Kaafu atoll Fushidhiggaru, a component of the broader Rasmale’ development. CMCCC was awarded the contract in December 2023.
MTCC filed the case after CMCCC failed to pay the agreed sum for services rendered under the contract. The court found that CMCCC had acknowledged its liability and ordered the company to settle the amount within one month.
The Rasmale’ project, one of the largest land reclamation initiatives in the country, aims to reclaim a total of 1,153 hectares of land. According to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), 100 hectares had been dredged as of 13 April, covering more than half the area of Hulhumale’ Phase 1.
HDC said in April that CMCCC was awarded 29 hectares at Site J, while MM Exports was awarded 72 hectares from Sites D, F, G, and L, out of a total of 378 hectares.
The reclaimed area at Fushidhiggaru is being raised to 2.5 metres above sea level 0.5 metres higher than Hulhumale’ in a move to increase climate resilience and guard against erosion.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged that Rasmale’ will provide 11,000 land plots and over 26,000 housing units. With a projected population of more than 240,000, the reclaimed land will also accommodate commercial, industrial, and tourism developments.
