CM Sonowal Launches Barak Dredging at Opening of Mega River Festival

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday launched dredging operations for the Barak river during the inauguration of the three-day Namami Barak festival The Barak river, designated as National Waterways-16, saw the commencement of the cleaning-up activity at Bhanga point in Karimganj district. The Barak river will link up the Barak Valley region of Assam and neighboring Mizoram and Manipur with the Haldia port in West Bengal via Bangladesh, the chief minister said.Two cutter suction dredgers (CSD) were engaged in the clean-up task. Three more CSDs will arrive in the next few days, the chief minister informed , As Reported By TOI.

According to the Newspaper,”The dredging of the river systems of Assam has begun with the Barak river. Once dredging is done, the Barak river will see a sea-change in terms of betterment of the economic scenario of the region,” said Sonowal.The chief minister, while inaugurating the three-day festival at a packed venue at Police Parade ground here said the Barak valley region was discriminated against by previous governments where development was concerned. The BJP government wants parallel development of both the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys.Announcing a bevvy of projects, the chief minister said three major bridges will be constructed in Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts each.
