Where will the dredged sand from the Mississippi River go?
Seems like it would be a dredged materials placement facility or facilities in Wabasha, but that’s pending the outcome of a City Council meeting last Tuesday.
The design or construction facility hasn’t happened yet. A city council meeting is scheduled for at City Hall as the city, its Port Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers discuss a memorandum of understanding.
The memorandum is to develop plans for a public-private partnership to design, construct, manage and operate a port facility.
More than 10 million cubic yards of sand will need to be removed over the next 40 years. Last year, the USACE drafted a recommended plan to drop the sand off at family farm lands.
But after push-back and opposition from the community, no farm lands would be touched. We were told by one of those farmers that future location of the facility, pictured to the right, would be located between the hospital and the cemetery.
One of the conditions in the memorandum states the port facility needs to be approved by the Dredged Material Management Plan and needs an environmental review.
