City joins latest harbour divestiture process

Owen Sound council voted Monday night to participate in the federal government’s latest process to sell or otherwise divest federal lands around Owen Sound’s port.

The city may not be the one to ultimately take possession of the federal port lands and waters but by joining the process it will receive more information and maintain its interest in the harbour, Kelso Beach and the waterfront walkways, a staff report to council says.

The city has wanted the federal government to pay for dredging the harbour since 2001 to assist commercial shipping. The federal government’s position is that dredging must be linked with divestiture.
