City Council, County Commissioners Deadlock on Next Port Chairman (USA – Texas)

Posted on January 16, 2019

The Houston City Council and Harris County Commissioners met Monday to choose a new chair for the Port of Houston Authority, but they couldn’t come to a consensus.

The meeting was filled with confusion over procedure and arguments over the way votes should be taken. Ultimately, it came down to two candidates: Ric Campo, chairman and CEO of Camden Property Trust, and Clyde Fitzgerald, a Port Houston Commissioner and president emeritus of the International Longshoremen’s Association South Atlantic Gulf Coast District.

Neither had the majority of votes, so the two boards decided to meet again Thursday at 2 p.m. If they remain deadlocked, the governor would select a chair.

he Chronicle, based on its reporting, previously wrote that Campo was expected to be named chair. But it was a pretty event split on Monday between the two candidates seeking to succeed Janiece Longoria, who is stepping down due to term limits.

Longoria was the first Hispanic and the first woman to lead this board.
