RAPID CITY, SD—Beginning last week, City Parks crews and South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks contractor crews are working to drain and dredge the Jackson Ponds along Jackson Boulevard across from Jackson Park. City Parks officials are advising the public to stay away from the work areas for the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed by mid-March.
Parks crews are pumping water out of the ponds in preparation for dredging out the silt by contractor crews, which is scheduled from early February through mid-March. The ponds are located on the south side of Jackson Boulevard across from Jackson Park between Argyle Street and Central Boulevard.
“We’ve wanted to dredge the Jackson ponds for the past few years and this year we are able to coordinate with South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks to get the work done,” said City Parks Division Manager Scott Anderson.
Anderson said the project will improve water quality and the state is planning fish habitat improvements in the ponds.
Orange web fencing has been erected in the affected area along with signage warning the public to stay off the ponds due to thin ice.
“There will most likely be a void under the ice as the water gets lower,” said Anderson. “We have signage up and homeowners in the area have been notified. We want to notify the public to stay off the ponds and away from the work area.”
